A Hebrew School your child will love attending!
Wouldn’t you want to love to learn too?

A t the Katherine Winokur Chabad Hebrew School, we hope to engage your child's sense of identity by capturing his/her imagination and attention. So, we put a lot of effort into providing our students with subs tantive lessons and a positive atmosphere.

In September 2009, The Jewish Center of Northern Liberties began a program, the Katherine Winokur Chabad Hebrew School, with the aim to provide a quality Judaic education to a diverse community of Jewish children in Philadelphia. The mission is to nurture and build the foundation of our students’ Jewish identity through our interdisciplinary educational approach. The focus of our dedicated teachers is to inspire a two-fold love. A love for learning and a love for Judaism while fostering a feeling of familiarity within our heritage for each individual child.

The Program

Our School runs most Sundays from after Labor Day through mid June, 10:30 am until 12:30 pm. A typical day includes Prayers, Kosher snack, Jewish Learning time, and Hebrew Language. We often include an art project, cooking experiment, music, song and drama, or other creative activity, as we learn in an experiential and joyful way. We don’t require children to come with any previous knowledge, and we commit to working with every child as he/she learns, and build on his/her previous experiences and education. We don’t require any synagogue membership to attend.

Our students learn to read, write and understand Hebrew over the course of their years at Hebrew School. We follow the students from 4 years through teenage-hood, and work with them in a one-on-one and small group format to ensure we are constantly meeting their Hebrew Language needs. We choose several highly-acclaimed Hebrew Language Programs to help our students master the skills they need.

The children gain confidence and familiarity with the Siddur-Hebrew Prayer Book. The repertoire of songs and prayers, and depth of knowledge increases with their maturity and abilities.

Study of the weekly Torah portion provides our students with practical lessons that apply to our daily lives.

Our students will attain affection for our heritage and the uniqueness of our homeland Israel.

The students gain an appreciation of our heritage and culture that has been preserved throughout the ages. We delve into the Jewish heroes of our past, cultivating connections and modern-day appreciation for our incredibly rich history. We use several programs to this end, which take several years for our students to get through, taking them on journey from the first Jew, Abraham, into modern times.

Traditions and celebrations, exploring the Jewish Holidays and Shabbat will provide a deeper understanding for our students.

Beginning with the origins of the mitzvot, and traveling through the Jewish lifecycle events and milestones, our students will explore a personal Jewishness.

Words from Happy Parents:

LOVE IT! M. is in love with her teachers and more importantly, in love with learning. What a sense of accomplishment. She looked forward to school. Very nurturing - and educational. She has had many compliments on her Aleph Bet book - and I enjoyed the crafts and Torah references. The fact that you were able to address so many different levels of education and interest is impressive, and speaks to your enthusiasm and abilities as well. Would (and do) recommend it highly! -J

"I can't imagine a more positive and joyful experience for Hebrew School - M. loved going and learned so much. What I particularly appreciate is the fact that even the younger children are taught davening, the parsha, the Hebrew alphabet - not just "stories" from the Torah, or only a focus on the holidays. They are simply taught what it means to be Jewish - I wish I had had that kind of Jewish education when I was a child. :) "

" The workbooks the school provides are creative and engaging, but the real magic of the school is the atmosphere that the Lowensteins create. They truly understand children and how children learn, and keep the kids completely entranced the whole time. My boys were in amazingly good moods every time I picked them up from Hebrew School, excited, happy and eager to share what they learned. As one of them said "this Hebrew School is SO much better than the last one because they have better snacks, nicer kids, better teachers, and I'm actually learning something!!!" We simply could not be happier."

" I feel that they have learned a lot in a warm, nurturing environment. They have done many hands on activities and have engaged in experiential learning. They have progressed very rapidly with their Hebrew studies."
